Staying on track with fitness when life throws you a curveball

Ever heard the phrase, "The only constant in life is change"?

It's one of those sayings that rings true, especially when life serves up unexpected curveballs—be it an injury, a shift in work schedule, family changes, or even a global pandemic.

I understand this all too well. This week I'm having rotator cuff surgery, so I'm doing everything I can to mentally and physically prepare.

You might be facing something like:

  • A sprained muscle, a surprising diagnosis, medical treatments, or an unexpected surgery

  • A new job that demands more of your time or a longer commute

  • A change in environment, like moving to a new location

  • A new baby, caring for an ailing family member, or kids switching to remote learning

  • Financial struggles

  • Going through an emotional phase, like the loss of a loved one or a breakup

  • All the fun "aches and pains" that come with getting older

  • Being diagnosed with a chronic health condition like arthritis, diabetes, or heart disease

  • Pushing yourself too hard to where recovery is an issue

The question is, "How do I keep up with my fitness and health goals when everything around me is in flux?"

First off, let's acknowledge one thing: it's okay to feel frustrated or overwhelmed. Life's unpredictability can be a tough pill to swallow. 

But here's where you have an advantage. 

By reading this article, I can tell you're committed to your health and fitness. This shows me that you have the desire to take on new challenges. 

Now, it's about channeling that same energy and determination into adapting to your new circumstances.

How do you do that? Here are some strategies:

Acceptance

This is not a step backward, but a necessary pause or adjustment. Treat it as an opportunity for growth, a challenge to become more resilient. Positive reframing is a powerful way to make the most of this phase of your life!

Education

Understand the nature of your change and how it impacts your routines. The more you know, the better you can plan. Watch videos, listen to podcasts, and engage in a supportive community (like our Wits & Weights Facebook group).

Stay Active Within Your Limits

Not all changes require you to stop physical activity entirely. Explore other forms of training or movement that fit your new circumstances. This includes different movements in the gym, walking, focusing more on one area of the body, and so on.

Engage Your Mind

This is a perfect opportunity to learn something new. Always wanted to learn Spanish or bake the perfect sourdough? Now's your chance.

Reach Out

Your support network is invaluable during times of change. Whether it's for practical help or a listening ear, don't hesitate to lean on them. Again, jump into our FB community and you'll find so many friendly, supportive members who can give you ideas, cheer you up, and answer questions.

Seek Professional Help

If feelings of anxiety or depression become overwhelming, reach out to a mental health professional. Their guidance can be incredibly valuable during these times.

And hey, just because your routine has been thrown for a loop doesn't mean you have to sit idle.

Depending on your situation, you can use this time to connect more with your family and friends, start a blog or post your progress on social media (or a podcast/live), learn to play an instrument, take on home projects, or even start a virtual book club with friends. There are plenty of ways to enrich your life and grow during this period.

Bottom Line

Change is inevitable, but it doesn't have to derail your journey to better health and fitness. 

It's all about adapting, exploring new paths, and, most importantly, being kind to yourself throughout the process.

So next time life throws a curveball your way, take a deep breath, assess the situation, and relish the opportunity to take on new challenges and adapt!
